Jewel by Doris Chan

Ok, I took Doris up on her word about the designs in her book Everyday Crochet being customizable.  I used the pattern for "Jewel" to make a beach cover-up for Missyboo.  As she's only 6, and Doris' pattern at the smallest is an adult xs......a few changes were made.  The best part was this only took me about 10 hours to hook up!

I used some of my Tahki Stacy Charles Venus I picked up on my first trip to WEBS a couple of weeks ago, and edged it with some Lion Brand Turquoise Cotton I had laying around.  At first I was using the cotton to mark my corners, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked the two yarn colors together.  This was my first time using any Tahki Stacy Charles, and I have to say it's a gorgeous yarn.  But I was disappointed to find that the label read 83 yds, and I had a couple balls that were only 70.5 yds.

I love that Doris has some symbol charting along with the written directions.  It made it much easier to make my size adjustments for the shoulder width, and then down for the underarm area.  So it's Doris' pattern from the shoulder to the waist, a section I added at the waist, then back to the original pattern for the lower half of the garment.

Missyboo loves it, and I'm hoping she'll get two seasons out of it before it turns into a top for her to wear!  So here's a so-so picture of my first-ever Doris Chan pattern.  I hope to get a better one this weekend.  Let me know what you think of it!

The coverup looks great. I guess Doris' patterns really are customizable. I have Everyday Crochet sitting right next to my chair because I'm making Mocha Roca, so I pulled it out and compared Jewel to the coverup. Very nice job! Only now, I really want to make Jewel, too. lol

Yarn labels are generic ... the yardage will differ based upon the color of the yarn. The yarn company would lose money if they sold all the colors by yardage for the same amount. Therefore they sell by weight. The yardage is approximate.

I think Doris Chan project came out great; bringing it to the meeting tomorrow, right? {hint hint}

Thanks for your comment on Mocha Roca. I would bring it tomorrow to show off, only I'm not going to make it to the meeting. It's my mom's birthday tomorrow, so we are spending the day with our parents to celebrate. I'll bring it next month, though, and maybe it will be finished by then!

I always thought it was sold by weight, and different colors had various weights. Didn't realize a different color could make a yarn longer or shorter!
